Heather Kelly spoke at the Veterans Affairs Psychology Leaders Conference in San Antonio on May 19-22, 2015, about APA's advocacy for research, training and clinical work related to veterans. Kelly also presented a webinar on May 13 to the graduate student committees of APA's Division 9 (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues) and Division 41 (American Psychology-Law Society) on how students and early career psychologists can find a niche in the policy world.
Geoff Mumford coordinated APA’s role in sending a letter, dated May 1, to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies urging the committee to approve funding for the FDA’s oversight of tobacco products. The letter was signed by 18 associations and societies. Mumford also attended the spring meeting of the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse Council meeting on May 6.
Pat Kobor and Craig Fisher represented APA at a recent town hall meeting of the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research, a broad coalition of scientific and health organizations that advocates on behalf of the National Institutes of Health. The meeting participants heard updates from Adrienne Hallett, NIH’s new Director of the Office of Legislative and Policy Analysis, and Kei Koizumi of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Craig Fisher attended the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research meeting on May 4. Neuropsychologist Dr. Alison Cernich, the recently named Director of the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR), gave her inaugural Director’s Report, laying out NCMRR’s budget and current initiatives.
Fisher also met with congressional staff during the May 6 Friends of National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Hill Day to advocate for increased funding for NIH and NICHD. Earlier in the day, the Friends hosted a meet-and-greet with NICHD Director Alan Guttmacher and Deputy Director Cathy Spong.
